Thoughts from the Prayer Room – “The Wildest Worshipers in Heaven are Actually Old Folks?”
February 26, 2021“COOL IT” There is a story I’ve become familiar with in my last ten years of being a Christian. It goes something like this— Young person is lost in sin. Congregation prays for said young person to receive salvation. God answers prayer—young person receives salvation and is delivered from sin. Congregation praises God; they are overcome with joy. Young person becomes a passionate worshiper of Jesus and challenges the status quo. Congregation warns young person to balance their “zeal with wisdom.” On one hand, the congregation has a point. I actually strongly agree that it is right for young believers to seek wisdom from the word of God and from stronger believers in the faith. On the other hand… I cringe at the idea that acquiring wisdom equates with losing zeal for Jesus. Not only is it unnecessary, but I believe it’s actually unbiblical in many ways. I’ll explain, but first let me share a story. A WEIGHTIER EXAMPLE When I came into the faith I was a young man who’d just come out of a lifestyle of drug addiction. I was a zealous drug user so it only made sense to me that I’d be just as zealous for Jesus. Even without this logic, Jesus was simply too amazing to me to “let my fire cool down.” My first year in the faith was spent in a faith-based recovery program and I was known as the guy who sang too loud, lifted his hands too high, and went to the altar too much. I think I annoyed a lot of my peers, but I honestly didn’t care much....
