The First Step to Leadership Growth

August 27, 2020

Leadership growth begins with the simple acknowledgement that a single person can accomplish only a fraction of what a team can. If we truly want to be a part of something big that God wants to do in the earth, then effective leadership starts with the realization that we’re limited and we need others. One of my favorite verses in the Bible is, “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10).” This verse helps us understand that the launching pad to true wisdom begins with the knowledge of God and our reverence for Him. Based on this simple Bible proverb, I’d suggest another proverb related to leadership: “The beginning of true leadership is the knowledge of our own need for others.” Once a leader acknowledges their own limits, deficiencies and need for others, they can begin to invite others to join them on a journey, helping them to build something greater than any one person can accomplish.  When a leader starts with this acknowledgement then it’s easier for them to continue to credit great successes and breakthroughs to the team and not merely to themselves. This is essential in not only growing a team but also in maintaining a team. For example, I need others so that WE can succeed, not merely so I can succeed at their expense. Below is an encouraging word for ministry leaders, pastors and volunteer leaders on how we can apply this simple scripture to help improve your team! Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations. You will have plenty of goats’ milk to feed your family and to nourish your female servants. (Prov 27:23-Prov 27:27 NIV ) A Few Things we can learn: God’s greatest treasure he’s given us in the ministry we work in is not the donors, the assets or the events. The greatest treasure are the people He’s entrusted us with. Think of your team this morning and allow God to show you how they are treasure that He’s entrusted you with. Take a few minutes to pray over them. Prayer is a powerful way to help improve your team! Take an honest assessment of your “flock”. Who’s on your team and how are they really doing? Do you sense any conflict, strife or...
