An Unexpected Change of Plans On Thursday, September 26th, while many were hunkering down for the hurricane, with shops closing early and people rushing home, I felt led to keep my downtown lunch and outreach as scheduled from 12pm to 2pm. Originally, the plan was to go to Simple Greek, but due to the storm, they closed early. So, my friends and I decided to head to Barberitos downtown instead. A Rainy Start and a Welcoming Atmosphere By the time we arrived, the rain had started to settle in. Four of us were able to make it. We quickly jumped in line to order. I introduced myself to the lunch workers, and we struck up an easy conversation. They mentioned they would likely close early, too, but not until 2pm, so we had some time. After ordering our food, we sat at a large table near the front—a table I had never sat at before. Spreading Encouragement to Strangers As we spent time in fellowship and enjoyed our meal, I felt led to write encouraging notes to the Barberitos staff and to a couple seated in the restaurant. This way, each of us would be able to share a word of encouragement with someone. Thankfully, my friend Esther had pens and paper for everyone to use. Harvest Day - Long Term Impact During our monthly Saturday outreach, I had the chance to partner with George Pfannschmidt and his team at Anderson Park. When I arrived, the team already had a tent set up with chips, chili dogs, and goodie bags and were ministering to two ladies. Before we began to pray, one of the women shared that she knew Cindy, the coordinator of our Redeem boutique. The woman shared how thankful she was that Cindy had given her clothes when she had nothing other than what she was wearing. Overcome with gratitude, we began praying for her and the second lady. At that moment, two more people walked up… one of whom had a very familiar face. One of them, Tina, said that we had met several years earlier at a Bible study in Andrew and Ellen Chalmers’ home. She beamed with pride as she remembered and shared that her son would volunteer to say the main Scripture from the Bible Study that he knew from memory. I rejoiced that their time spent with Andrew and Ellen had left such a positive and long-term impact. Many times, we do not know the impact of how our simple actions can bless someone else. We may just be doing what we always do– giving someone clothes, inviting people into our home to study the Bible, or even simply asking how someone’s day is going. Testimonies from Harvest Day Outreach Approaching the group somewhat nervously, the first-time volunteer wasn’t sure what to expect. She felt better right away when she learned there were others like her – six, in fact. Two of the newbies had been reached through Redeem and were now participating in an outreach! Outreach Leaders Katherine Server and Brandon McKenzie immediately put everyone at ease and the short training gave the volunteer the information – and excitement to go out – she needed. She realized her nerves had settled down and decided it was going to be a good day.*During a kids outreach to L.P. Stough Apartments in Phenix City, 7 kids gave their lives to Christ as they heard the message of Jesus.*In one of our Project Lifehouse homes, our Young Ave missionaries Johnny and Andrew encountered two new guys in their neighborhood. Johnny and Andrew are excited to grow in relationship with them.*Still another outreach ministered to a nursing home and powerful connections were made between our team and their staff.As they regrouped and testified together two hours later, volunteers shared their experience and expressed how glad they were that they had set aside a Saturday to make a difference in the communities. Join us as we facilitate an atmosphere of worship, prayer, and gospel proclamation for 2 whole days. We will kick off at 6pm on Friday Oct. 6th with 48 hours of unceasing worship. Worship and prayer teams from various churches in our region will take up two-hour worship sets, back-to-back, creating a seamless flow of ministry to the Lord the entire weekend.
