Redeem hosted a W.A.R weekend where we rented out motel rooms and had teams participating in constant prayer, worship and outreach. The last night, we went around knocking on doors inviting the community to free food and a chance to hear the gospel. Our team encountered a young woman and and older gentleman. She was clearly under the influence of drugs and our team had every reason to believe she was being trafficked. We brought her a blanket a church had donated and we began to minister to her in her room as Jonathan was ministering to the older gentleman down by the cookout. As the team explained the hotline card to her, she blurted out “ Well, you know I’m a prostitute right, I choose to do this to support my addiction.” She wanted to convince us this was her “choice”, yet our team knew there was something deeper. So Jessica replied, “Can I ask you, are you happy though?” Are you happy living this life?” She looked at the team shocked as if no one had ever cared to ask that before. As she gazed away, she timidly responded, “I’ve been to 43 states and I never knew there were people out there to help me…. so what are the ways you can help?” As the opportunity presented itself, we were able to share the amazing programs we partner with, and over the course of the next few weeks, she called for help and is now thriving in her walk to wholeness! Simultaneously as this was happening, the older gentleman heard the gospel and got radically encountered by the love of Jesus and chose to dedicate his life to Jesus. When he chose to get off drugs and into a long term program, it was the same day she chose to. This is why we must emphasize that it is TRULY the gospel that will break the chains of trafficking, for both the women and the men. We must have a holistic perspective on the issue and ask Jesus for His heart for the traffickers and the men purchasing sex.
